Fractures and dislocations of the hand and wrist are among the most common orthopedic injuries. Whether from a fall, sports impact, or workplace accident, these injuries require prompt, accurate diagnosis and treatment to restore full function and prevent long-term complications.
The hand and wrist contain 27 bones — any of which can fracture. Common fractures include distal radius fractures (the most common wrist fracture), scaphoid fractures (often missed on initial X-ray), metacarpal fractures (including boxer's fracture), and phalangeal fractures of the fingers.
Dislocations most commonly occur at the finger joints (PIP and DIP joints) and the wrist. A perilunate dislocation is a serious wrist injury that requires urgent surgical treatment.
Treatment depends on fracture type, location, and stability. Many fractures can be managed non-surgically with casting or splinting. Unstable or displaced fractures typically require surgical fixation using pins, screws, or plates to restore proper alignment.
Dr. Kinchelow specializes in both closed reduction techniques and open surgical fixation, tailoring the approach to each patient's injury and lifestyle goals. Rehabilitation and occupational therapy are integral to recovery.
